Shots fired at Saratoga Springs police station

Shots were fired at the Saratoga Springs Police Department Friday evening. No one was hit, police said. One person is in custody.

Shots were fired outside the Saratoga Springs Police Department Friday evening.

No one was hit by the gun fire, police said. However, a parked Saratoga Springs police cruiser was hit by bullets and damaged.

Police said the incident happened at 7:43 p.m. Friday once an officer at the station heard a gunshot outside. Officers then exited the police station and immediately pointed their weapons at the suspect.

No officers fired their weapons, and no members of the public were injured.

The suspect then drove off and a police chase began. The police chase went on for about eight miles when the driver pulled into the parking lot at the Market 32 in Malta where he was safely taken into custody and transported to the police department for questioning.

Police have identified the suspect as 76-year-old man from Malta named Paul Trinci. Trinci remains in custody and was questioned by police. His charges are currently pending.

Investigators have also learned that before firing his weapon outside the police station, Trinci first fired his weapon on Division Street in Saratoga Springs. Police said the incident happened just before 6:55 p.m. Friday. Following this incident, police said that they found a car that was parked on Division Street near Spot Coffee that was hit by gun fire.

Saratoga Springs Police tell NewsChannel 13 that early stages in the investigation show the suspect’s desire “to create a deadly force engagement with police.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing and urge anyone with information to contact the Saratoga Springs Police Department at (518) 584 -1800.

Authorities add that they are unaware of any of other damage or incidents.

Lake Avenue was closed from Maple Avenue to Broadway for a few hours Friday evening as police investigated.

Police add they are more prepared to welcome everyone to the city for Chowderfest.
