Siena College could soon become Siena University.

The board of trustees voted on Friday to move forward with the recommendation, President Chuck Seifert said in a video.

It came after lots of feedback from the community, including faculty, students and alumni, he said.

Seifert noted the college has recently added graduate and professional programs, more research and partnerships and expanded facilities. He also tried to ease fears the name change would distance the college from its core values.

“This is about standing taller in what we are, mission-driven, value-centered, future-focused. That will never change,” he said. “This proud step forward will open new doors for our students, strengthen our reputation, and put us in a stronger position to compete, lead, and thrive.”

“We are already doing the work of a university. It’s time we own it,” he added.

The name change could be approved by the New York State Board of Regents, later this year.
