Man gets prison time for Fatal shooting in Cohoes

A South Carolina man was sentenced on Tuesday to up to 15 years in prison for fatally shooting a Cohoes man in 2023.

Nalik Sealy, 26, had pleaded previously guilty to causing the death of Shieer Leggett. This stemmed from a fight that happened on Aug. 11, 2023 outside of a convenience store on Main Street.

Dontie Mitchell had sparked a confrontation with Sealy. During a gunfight, a bullet from Sealy’s gun struck and killed his friend Leggett, according to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office.

Mitchell was acquitted last month of attempted murder, but convicted of weapons possession. 

Sealy was sentenced to 5 to 15 years on the manslaughter charge and 12 years on a criminal possession of a weapon charge. They two sentences run consecutively for a maximum of 15 years in prison.
