Arkansas man, 75, believed to be oldest referee in state
As the clock ticks, so does the career of one admired referee.
James “Old School” Givens, 75, is believed to be the oldest referee in Arkansas.
Off the clock, Givens is all smiles but once the ball is in play, he’s in action.
Givens has been calling middle and high school games for more than 30 years, meeting teams across the state.
No matter where he goes, the fundamentals of the game are always the same – show respect to the players and coaches and they’ll usually show it back.
Givens has no plans of slowing down, hoping to get a few more years before his final seconds on the court.
He says he hopes to keep referring for at least another three to four years.
