Warren County deputies hope Halloween candy will be community treat

Sheriff’s deputies in Warren County will be in uniform and in costume this Halloween as they hand out more than $3,000 worth of candy to trick-or-treaters.

It’s another way the sheriff is trying to break down barriers between the uniform and children.

Sheriff Jim LaFarr organized it, enlisting the aid of his officers and staff to hand out candy to everyone who wants it.

Connecting with community, especially kids, is a priority of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. As NewsChannel 13 has reported, they’re part of a program that pairs deputies with children who could use a positive role model. It’s called “Bigs in Blue.”

Now they’re hoping to make an annual connection with kids at Halloween time. They’ve set up a big Trunk-or Treat event for the afternoon of Halloween. More than a dozen police cars will line the road around the Warren County Municipal Center and people will drive through getting treats at each stop along the way.

The sheriff has already gotten more than $3,000 worth of candy to hand out, and they’re looking for more.

"We have a strong desire to connect with community, and especially with children. Break down the barriers between the uniform and our kids," said LaFarr. "This is just one way where they can come through with their parents, they’re comfortable, they’re in a vehicle, they can interact with one of our members, get a little bit of candy, move on and do it again."

The first Warren County Trunk-or-Treat is Sunday, Oct. 31 from noon to 2 p.m. You don’t have to live in the county.
