A community block party was held in Troy to raise awareness about domestic violence.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Unity House, a resource center for victims of domestic violence, hosted the event. Staff from the organization provided resources and information about domestic violence. They had guest speakers and featured educational opportunities to teach people more about what they can do if they witness a domestic violence incident.
Local police and agencies say that they are receiving more calls about domestic violence this year than before.
"We want to bring together so everyone knows where to seek help. If they are going through a domestic violence incident or they know someone who is or if they just want to know what’s available in their community," said Sarah McGaughnea, Specialty Program Director at Unity House.
While Unity House is located in Troy, they provide support and resources to people all across the Capital Region.
Unity House is open all year round and even have a 24-Hour Crisis Hotline. That number is 518-272-2370.
