No injuries after truck crashes into Delmar store

DELMAR – Folks who stopped at Four Corners in Delmar Wednesday evening and saw what was in the window of the 5th Corner Goods and Gifts Shop were all saying the same thing: How in the world did that happen?

When folks got there around dinner time, they saw a Chevy pick-up truck partially in the building and partially out. The truck had smashed through the storefront plate glass window backwards.

Authorities say the man behind the wheel of that truck was 89-years old, which some people say might help explain the bizarre predicament.

"Things are odd but nothing surprises us any more," said Delmar Fire Chief Arlie Hedges.

When his foot slipped off the brake and onto the accelerator, the vehicle was in reverse, which means the truck smashed through the large plate glass window backwards.

"We’re being told that the motorist was traveling eastbound on Kenwood Avenue, and attempted to make a right hand turn to travel westbound on Delaware Avenue and failed to negotiate that turn, and attempted to back up, and backed up a little bit further then he needed to," Hedges summed up.

Broken glass, bricks, and dry goods flew in every direction. The two occupants of the truck got out under their own power. The lone store employee on duty escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, the woman who lives in the apartment above the store was not home at the time. She’ll be staying elsewhere until a structural engineer can inspect the building.

Back in November, 2020, a red Jeep Cherokee wreaked havoc on the same sidewalk, knocking down lamp posts, and side-swiping some of the same store fronts before crashing into a parked car.

The business’ two month anniversary was supposed to be Thursday.
