Backyard chicken rules being discussed by Rotterdam lawmakers

People living in Rotterdam may be flocking to a town board meeting on Wednesday evening. Lawmakers are talking about whether or not to allow people to raise chickens in their backyard.
The law would allow homeowners in town to have up to six of them. There are other Capital Region cities and towns allowing that.
If this law is passed, the town code’s department will issue permits for those allowed to have chickens.
However, there would be some ground rules:
- Chickens cannot wander beyond their property lines.
- Chickens must be in backyards only.
- If anyone is found in violation of the law, their permit will be revoked for two years.

Some potential chicken owners will see this new law as a slam dunk. However, several residents have expressed concern about the town’s plan to enforce the law.
Some residents cite concerns around chicken waste odors, and potential wildlife attacks on chickens.
