ALBANY – A life-changing project is on display in front of the New York State Capitol. More than 100 people came out Tuesday to start building a home that will eventually become home for a family in Glens Falls.
Doing all the work were more than 100 volunteers from Habitat for Humanity affiliates across New York. There were also state lawmakers, housing leaders and staff from Gov. Hochul’s office helping out.
The goal was to shine a spotlight on affordable homeownership as part of the solution to the state’s housing affordability challenges.
Roughly half of all renters – and more than one in four homeowners across the state – are struggling to afford their home.
Once this house is completed, it will be disassembled, and then put back together again in Saratoga Springs so that a pre-qualified family can move right in.
The volunteers are celebrating something that has never been in the New York state budget before – $400 million for homeownership.
