Asian Troy business owner recalls initial struggle of overcoming community racism

TROY – Nite Owl News is a busy place in the heart of downtown Troy.
Owner Yong Rhee says it was tough for his family at first, but he has built many relationships. The store on the corner of 4th and Fulton Street is a busy place right near a bus stop. There is a steady stream of customers. Rhee is quick with a greeting.
The store is surprisingly big inside, with different departments. It’s a newsstand with groceries and a drugstore. There’s also a wide variety of hair products – including wigs. It’s a diverse clientele.
This is a successful store. He’s been there more than 27 years. There is a family feel, with many photos and articles celebrating the longevity of his business, and he’s proud of what he’s built. However, it wasn’t always easy.
