The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has $2 million in grants available to raise awareness about food waste reduction.
The goal is to divert this organic material away from landfills that are quickly filling up and to reduce methane emissions.
In 2019, the city of Albany got a food waste reduction grant of $225,000.
To qualify for the grants, municipalities must submit an application to state DEC.
