It’s important to make sure the older adults in your life are still socializing.
A doctor at the Cleveland Clinic says the pandemic proved that social isolation is a big problem and one of the most recognized contributors to mental health issues for older adults.
He says it’s okay to be sedentary once in a while, but it can have negative effects if it’s consistent. For example, it can impact blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar levels and can lead to depression.
How can you encourage an older adult to socialize? Doctors says it’s important to look into activities offered by the community, adding that older adults have to take the risk and do something different than what they’re used to.
These activities can improve cognition and offer a chance to make new connections and friends.
