Family acknowledges body is Sam’s

SCHENECTADY – The day after a body was pulled from the Mohawk River near the city’s Stockade Neighborhood, family members of Samantha Humphrey have posted messages on social media indicating they have come to grips with the reality that the nearly three month long search for Sam is over.

“When a $#*t day becomes an even more terrible day,” the Facebook post states, “But at least now there is closure of sorts. We’ve all dreaded this day and here it is.”

After a pair of fishermen spotted a “head” bobbing in the water underneath the old railroad bridge at the south end of Riverside Park at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, police were summoned.

Schenectady Police Chief Eric Clifford confirms a body was pulled from the river around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.

“I cannot confirm who it is,” Clifford stated, “It appeared the body had been there for a while.”

News Channel 13 has learned through sources the body was found in a shopping cart. Police have not confirmed that report.

14-year old Samantha Humphrey, a Schenectady High School freshman, went missing back on November 25th. Family members say she left home around 11:00 p.m. on a Friday night to meet up with an ex-boyfriend at Riverside Park and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

An autopsy on the body is expected either today or tomorrow.
