Budget battle could mean paycheck issues for thousands of state employees

The deadline for an on-time New York state budget passed over the weekend with no agreement, leaving about 57,000 state employees in jeopardy.

An agreement must be made by Monday night to ensure they get paid on time, the state comptroller said.

However, Assemblyman John McDonald said an extension on the budget will be filed so employees can get paid on-time.

As part of the budget, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans to build 800,000 thousand new homes over the next decade to address New York’s housing crisis, but nothing is set in stone just yet.

The governor is also proposing some changes that deal with bail and some that deal with overall public safety. The challenge is finding a solution that makes sense, said McDonald.
Once officials can agree on those two items, they can move forward.
