Juneteenth holiday comes with vast history behind it

Celebrating Juneteenth is becoming a more common occurrence. It marks the end of slavery in the United States in 1865.
It came after the Civil War, after the Emancipation Proclamation, after President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, but before the 13th Amendment was ratified. It outlawed slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth was a historic moment.
Dr. Jennifer Burns is an expert in Africana Studies at UAlbany. She says Black families have celebrated Juneteenth since 1865.
