Man charged in Kaylin Gillis’ killing to challenge his jail custody in court

The man accused of shooting and killing Kaylin Gillis, Kevin Monahan, will be in Warren County Supreme Court this Thursday.
Monahan is in court for a writ of habeas corpus hearing. That’s a hearing in which someone held in custody challenges why they’re being held in jail.
Monahan is accused of firing two rounds from a shotgun at a car turning around in his driveway in Hebron, Washington County. Gillis, 20, was in that car, and was killed.
Monahan’s attorney Kurt Mausert argued in that bail hearing the judge should have allowed Monahan to post bail and that remanding him is unwarranted.
A number of prejudicial and irrelevant arguments were raised against Monahan in that hearing, he said, including an assault charge that was dismissed in Vermont, an outburst at the DMV in Washington County a week before the shooting, and claims that Monahan is hot-tempered.
Kevin Monahan, 65, is accused of shooting and killing and Kaylin Gillis, 20, on April 15 in Hebron.
Mausert says his client is not a flight risk. He says he’s lived in the same home in Hebron, Washington County for more than 30 years and has owned his own business.
He also argues his client should be released under New York state bail reform laws.
Washington County District attorney Tony Jordan said he will be responding and opposing this in court on Thursday.
