Community remembers life of Destiny Greene

ALBANY – Services were held at the Elijah Missionary Baptist Church Wednesday, to honor the life and legacy of 15-year-old Destiny Greene.

The Shaker High teen was an innocent bystander who was shot and killed in Albany earlier this month.

“When they think of her, they think of ambition,” said Bishop Avery Comithier, of the Elijah Missionary Baptist Church. “She wanted to do so much. If you could see the obituary, basketball, playing the drums. Whatever was available to her, she wanted to do it. If it wasn’t available to her, she wanted to try it.”

On Wednesday, dozens of family members, friends, and classmates came together to honor Destiny’s life.

“It’s a show of love. That four-letter word carries a lot of weight. Love is genuine, but love can carry with it pain. Out of the pain, love comes back,” the bishop explained.

The group paid homage to her, by dressing in white.

“White brings out the brightness, the character of Destiny,” Bishop Comithier added.

Destiny is one of six people to have been shot and killed in the city during the month of May, and as the community comes together in mourning, Bishop Comithier is sharing a desperate plea.

“Call me. You can call me if there is a dispute uptown or downtown. Call me, let’s talk this thing out, rather than take a life,” he pleaded.

Following Wednesday’s services, the North Colonie Central School District will be hosting a vigil for Greene on Sunday at 8 p.m.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family, and has raised more than $27,000.
