Albany County Executive Dan McCoy announced a first of its kind initiative for seniors in the county on Tuesday.
He’s creating a creative aging campus.
This program is really meant to provide the benefits of a senior center for people living in the county, but without being confined to one space.
After a difficult period of isolation for seniors during the pandemic, local leaders say it’s really needed.
The program will offer lots of programming for seniors, including arts, music, outings to restaurants, and even classes on how to use Zoom or an iPhone.
It’s part of the county’s commitment to being an age-friendly community.
To help make these programs more accessible to seniors, the county’s Department of Aging will be moving to Shaker Place.
However, the campus is not just for Shaker Place residents. Seniors throughout the community can attend, providing a respite for their caregivers.
McCoy says you can even drop your loved one off there for an extended period of time if you need to go on vacation.
The county says there’s no cost to residents for the campus, and they’ll be rolling out the program in phases.
McCoy says there are no staffing issues when it comes to sustaining this program, but they’ll be relying on volunteers to help.
