Bennington man wanted for attempted murder in custody
Zachary Dumas, who jumped out of a two-story window to avoid being taken into custody by Bennington Police, was apprehended Sunday evening around 6:45 p.m., according to police.
An arrest warrant was issued for Dumas, 37, on Sept. 8 for attempted murder, assault and robbery charges. When police attempted to make contact, Dumas first locked himself in an apartment on Pleasant Street, then dove out a window as they were about to gain access to the apartment.
After landing on a rooftop, Dumas evaded police by diving over a fence into a row of hedges.
Police said they got a tip on Sunday that an individual matching Dumas’s description was seen riding a bicycle in the area of Gage Street, Division Street and Division Place. After observing Dumas at 3 Division Place, a residence under investigation for criminal activity, police attempted to take Dumas into custody.
Once again Dumas used a second-story window to get to the roof, where police said he stayed for a period of time before realizing the home was surrounded by police and going back inside, according to a report from Bennington Police.
Police obtained a search warrant then demanded Dumas’s surrender. When Dumas failed to surrender police entered the home around around 8:53 p.m. and taken into custody minutes later.
