Amsterdam man accused of weapons possession, violating orders of protection

An Amsterdam man is multiple charges including weapons possession following a domestic incident.
Amsterdam Police responded to a residence at Charles Lane at about 6:24 p.m. for a report of a man threatening harm with a firearm. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Corey J. Sumpter, was involved in a domestic incident. During the initial interview, Sumpter was not cooperative and tried to hinder the investigation, according to a news release.
During a search of the property, officers found a loaded Cobra 9 mm handgun. An Amsterdam Police detective responded to process the scene and located ammunition for the suspect’s weapon.
Sumpter was charged with felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated family offense and criminal contempt for allegedly violating orders of protection. He also was charged misdemeanors of menacing, obstructing governmental administration, criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child.
Sumpter was arraigned in Amsterdam City Court and sent to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail.
The Amsterdam Police Department was assisted by the office of the Montgomery County District Attorney Lorraine Diamond in this investigation, which is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
