Opening statements happened Monday in the trial of Nelson Patino.

He’s accused of stabbing his wife and son to death back in 2021.

Patino called 911 immediately after the crime, and said he had stabbed his family, investigators said.

His lawyer plans to argue that the stabbings were because of psychosis, brought on by COVID-19.

Patino is also accused of stabbing his 2-year-old son, who survived.

Patino has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison without parole.
