One teen is dead and another injured in a crash in Columbia County on Tuesday.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said 17-year-old Landon Delease, of Hillsdale, was heading north on Hunt Road in the town of Hillsdale in a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt. At about 5:49 p.m., the vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane and struck a tree.

Delease and his passenger, 17-year-old Hillsdale resident Richard Jennings III, were both ejected from the vehicle.

Several members of the public stopped to provide assistance and called 911. Delease was pronounced dead at the scene. Jennings was transported by helicopter to Albany Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe excessive speed contributed to the crash. The posted speed limit is 40 mph.

There were no signs of drug or alcohol use. The investigation is continuing.

The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Columbia County Coroner Michael Blasi, the Hillsdale Fire Department and the Community Rescue Squad assisted the Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
