Cassie Prugh has been helping put a smile on children’s faces for years..

Eight years ago, she rallied a team to fill out wish lists for 10 children. This year, Cassie’s project will adopt 35 children through Unity House in Troy.

“To me it was a good way to bring a little magic to the holidays, maybe for some that don’t have all the magic they’d like,” said Prugh.

The holiday store is back after being on pause during Covid. Thanks to First Columbia, it will be in a space in the Flanigan Square building on River Street in Troy.

“Having the store live where parents can come in and shop with dignity without any cost or concern of cost. They can come in, and they can get– we say two wants and two needs. Plus some clothes, pajamas,” said Unity House CEO Dave Bach.

Constant Louis says being able to get gifts for his family last year was just the support he needed.

“Knowing that the community comes together like this to give back, it’s really humbling,” he said.

Times are tough for many people.

“Last year we were providing gifts for about 1100 children, give or take, and this year we’re already tracking well above that,” said Bach.

Prugh says giving puts her in the holiday spirit.

“Oh, absolutely. This is my favorite thing every year,” she said. “My friends have gotten into it, my family’s gotten into it. My mother helps me decorate my house early so that it’s decorative when folks drop off their gifts for the children. I’ve made a party out of it some years, a gathering for folks to come together and drop off for the kids so absolutely, this is the highlight of my holiday season personally, too.”
