A Fulton County community is keeping a round-the-clock vigil at Albany Medical Center.

Their son Evan Wieczenski, 23, is in the intensive care unit following a head-on crash two and a half weeks ago.

They believe the power of prayer is working, they told NewsChannel 13.

The crash happened Nov. 18 on State Route 29A, Turkey Farm Road, in the town of Mayfield.

A speeding truck crossed over the double-yellow line and crashed head-on into a car.

The driver of the truck, 18-year-old Owen Marek, and Wieczenski, were both rushed to Albany Medical Center.

Wieczenski, a Fonda graduate and a senior airman with NY Air National Guard, has been there ever since. He is currently in critical condition, with broken bones all over his body, an injury to his brain and several surgeries. His family is keeping vigil by his side, along with his brothers and sisters from the 109th Airlift Wing.

Wieczenski,’s still attending SUNY Canton and wants to be a mental health counselor for adolescents.
He had recently taught himself to skate and became so good he joined a hockey team. He was driving home that night from skating in Schenectady and was sober.

Investigators are waiting for toxicology reports, said the sheriff, but the early indications are that Marek, had been drinking before the crash.

The sheriff expects a grand jury will vote to charge Marek, who was not hurt as badly.
