Albany seeks bond to pay settlement in wrongful conviction
Common Council voting on funds for settlement
The Albany Common Council is scheduled to vote Thursday on borrowing funds to pay a settlement to the estate of a man who was wrongly convicted of murder.
Lavell Jones and Carl Dukes spent nearly two decades in prison after being sentenced for killing Erik Mitchell, a UAlbany student.
In 2016, Albany County District Attorney David Soares reopened the case and eventually overturned those convictions.
Dukes and Jones sued the city and six detectives. In 2021, the city agreed to pay Dukes $5.75 million. Now, the Common Council is voting on borrowing $4.3 million to pay Jones’ estate.
Jones died in a 2021 motorcycle crash.
