Schenectady school addresses school safety

Schenectady school addresses school safety in the wake of an incident last week when a student brought a gun to school.

The new superintendent of Schenectady schools is weighing in on an incident in which a student was found with a gun last week.

A seventh grader brought a loaded gun to Mont Pleasant Middle School last week. The district tells NewsChannel 13 that the students backpack was searched because the principal believed something was wrong based on the student’s behavior.

Superintendent Carlos Cotto emphasized the importance of building relationships with students. The district has hired many school safety officers, as well as counselors, social workers and psychologists. Those are key pieces in ensuring safety.

The student did not appear to make any threats with the weapon.
