Local father helping raise money for blood cancer research
Derrick Mundweiler is a local father, a registered nurse, a general contractor, and a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor.
He’s currently making a major impact as part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Visionaries of the Year Campaign. Mundweiler is a member of Chloe Yonos’ team, the Dream Builders.
“The word cancer, you don’t want to hear it, no one wants to hear it, and it comes with very bad negative things,” Mundweiler said. “Throughout my journey, I’ve actually had a lot of positive experiences with this and fundraising, and supporting and helping others, and it’s brought me to a lot of places I don’t think I ever would have been.”
Mundweiler was 10 years old when he was diagnosed. After a year and a half of chemotherapy, he is now almost 20 years in remission. He believes without the diagnosis, he would not have the life he has now.
“My wife, I did meet through my mother-in-law, who was my chemo nurse,” Mundweiler said. “We met later down the road and rekindled things, and she’s my hero, one of my heroes, and I have a beautiful son because of her.”
