ONLY ON 13: Video shows homeless man describing assault by juveniles in Watervliet
A homeless man was assaulted by juveniles this weekend in Watervliet, police said.
Exclusive video sent to NewsChannel 13 shot by someone who came to the man’s aid shows him telling police about the incident, which took place on Second Avenue in Watervliet.
“I was trying to tell everybody that I want to be left alone. I’m going about my business. I don’t have the mental capacity if they jump me to protect myself,” the man told police.
The person who took the video, who would only give his name as Chris H., said he noticed something was wrong when he was leaving the Walgreens.
“I watched a man running down the street and he was screaming, ‘leave me alone, leave me alone.’ There was a group of kids following him.”
Chris H. said that the teens were running up to the man with a closed fist. He jumped out of his truck and he and other person got between the man and the juveniles and stopped the fight.
The homeless man is clearly distraught when explaining the situation.
“I don’t want to be touched. I don’t know what to do in that situation. I’m glad he pulled up because I wouldn’t have known what to do,” he said.
The homeless man said if something happens to these kids, he wants people to understand that I’m telling you guys these people are bothering me. ‘
Watervliet Police were unavailable for an interview but told NewsChannel 13 that the homeless man was complaining of rib pain. Police have not been able to confirm any injuries from the incident.
However, police said multiple people have been arrested. Because the suspects are juveniles, police said no more information can be released at this time. They do expect more arrests to come.
