Final design unveiled for memorial to Buffalo shooting victims

The final design for a memorial in honor of the people killed at a Buffalo grocery store was unveiled on Monday.

Tuesday marks two years since the mass shooting at the Tops Supermarket on May 14. The shooting was racially motivated. All 10 victims were Black.

The shooter, who was 18 at the time, is serving life in prison without parole.

The memorial design unveiled is titled “Seeing Us” and was designed by Jin Young Song and Douglass Alligood.

“As we approach the solemn two-year anniversary of when our neighbors were senselessly slaughtered solely because of the color of their skin, we rededicate ourselves in supporting the East Buffalo community, remembering those we lost, and supporting those who were injured,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

The cost of the project is around $15 million. The state announced another $4.1 million in funding, which brings the total state commitment to $5 million.
