First responders on high alert for heat-related emergencies

People cooling off as fire department warns of added dangers

First responders have been ready all week to answer the call for heat related emergencies.

Firefighters and EMS workers were ready to respond to people experiencing heat exhaustion during the heat wave.

The Troy Fire Department added sprinklers Thursday at Lansingburgh High School and two other locations in addition to the city’s splash pads.

Bennett Contracting has crews fanned out all over the area.

They tell us they’re limiting time in the sun and pushing their work hours earlier to avoid the heat.

Troy Fire Department said it was on high alert for people working outside experiencing fatigue.

They were also warning people about the heightened dangers for fire when people use more energy to cool their homes.

“There’s a risk for fire this time of year with the heat is people are running air conditioners, fans, we have a lot of old houses in the city where it’s pretty antiquated, the wiring and they’re overloading their circuitry making that wiring hot and potential for fire there,” said Eric Wisher, President of the Troy Uniform Firefighters Association Local 86.
