Investigators learn more about decomposed body found in Albany
The woman whose body was found on Sheridan Avenue last week in Albany had been missing for a few months, investigators said. They think they know who she is, but are waiting for official results to come back.
The investigation paints a grim picture of addiction, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said.
Investigators arrested the resident at 301 Sheridan Avenue in Albany, Steven Herbst, 42, and charged him with concealment of a human corpse, a class E felony.
“This is one of those dark and dirty areas of addiction that nobody really talks about, right? We have no signs of foul play. It appears at this point it was an overdose,” said Apple. “But again, they’re all partying in this apartment and somebody overdoses and instead of trying to call for help or get Narcan or whatever, that person passes away. So now, what do you do? They go into a little bit of a panic mode, don’t want to call attention on themselves, probably going to get kicked out of the housing that he doesn’t pay for, so you hide the body.”
The badly decomposed body of the woman was in a storage area attached to Herbst’s apartment, authorities said.
“Unfortunately, the building superintendent actually had gone in there at one point to close the vent because it was so – it was raining out, and he could smell something horrible, but he didn’t know what it was, and he was just like, ‘Oh, God’ and closed the door,” said Apple. “So unfortunately she’s been there a while, and you know what, now he can rot in jail.”
