Hoosick Falls is set to receive around $3 million as part of a settlement over contamination of its drinking water.

The village joined the national class action lawsuit involving 3M and DuPont, which manufactured chemicals known as PFAS. Those chemicals have been linked to health issues including cancer, birth defects and immune system problems.

The settlement will be paid out over the next three years, according to Hoosick Falls Mayor Rob Allen.

“Money for the settlement will go a long way to making up the time. The energy and resources that have been lost or diverted to our drinking water situation. It’s hard to really quantify the full amount of money and progress that the village as a municipality has lost over the past decade, whether it was putting off preventative maintenance, delaying necessary equipment replacement or taking on more debt,” he said.

This settlement is separate from the village’s ongoing legal matters with Saint-Gobain  Plastics and Honeywell International.

Allen said that the village has a permanent filtration system in place and a brand-new water source arriving soon. The vast majority of this was paid by outside parties.
