Lyft driver can’t use car after transporting Troy gunshot victim

Local Lyft driver is caught up in shooting

A man who had just started driving for Lyft suddenly got caught up in a shooting in Troy. One of his passengers got shot, then got back into his car, and now he's left with quite a mess.

Troy, N.Y. (WNYT) – Troy police said one man was injured in a shooting near Florence Place and 102nd Street last Tuesday.

Police said in a release last week that the victim was taken by private vehicle to the hospital.

It turns out that that private vehicle was a Lyft driver, who does not want to be identified.

He says he picked up two men on Grand Street in Troy. There was one stop, and one of the men got out.

“He went into one house and then he went into another side where there was a lot of people gathering there. In a moment, I hear the shots,” said the driver.

“So of course I turn on my car and I was going to leave and the guy grabbed me and he said no, you’re not leaving, wait. I don’t know what is happening. So I just stayed there.”

It happened so fast. All of a sudden the man is back in the back seat, but he’s injured– he’s shot and bleeding.

“He brings the guy inside of my car and he said drive. And they start to treat me in horrible ways, saying all the bad words, starting from the N and ending with the F. They were hitting the headrest. I just started driving. I didn’t know where I was going.”

They told him to drive to the hospital and he was scared.

“I wasn’t just a driver. They obligated me to drive them. They basically took me hostage,” he said, adding that he felt he had been kidnapped.

Now because of the mess, he can’t use his car.

He says he found estimates are $3900 just for the seat, or $4900 to sanitize the entire car because all of the blood is a biohazard.

He calls it demoralizing. He bought a machine to clean it himself, but that really did not work, and he says the smell is very bad.

He needs the car to do his day job, and he’s walking or relying on rides from friends to get to work.

A Lyft company spokesperson says the company is helping.

UPDATE FROM LYFT TUESDAY: “Safety is fundamental to Lyft, and the incident described is deeply troubling. We have been in contact with the driver to offer our support, including the full reimbursement for all car cleaning services associated with this incident. We have also permanently banned the rider’s account from the Lyft platform, and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.” – Lyft Spokesperson
