Schodack Police warn of extortion scam

The Schodack Police Department is warning residents of a scam in which people are being pressured to transfer funds to an unknown account.

The scam involves people being emailed threats to send the money as a form of blackmail or “sextortion,” according to police. This is a common means of extortion happening nationwide.

The requests are in the form of a PDF and state that if the person does not pay in the form of bitcoin, there will be repercussions. In addition, the emails state that the recipient will be “outed” for viewing pornographic material. An image of the recipient’s residence will be included.
