MVP Arena doesn’t make the cut to host March Madness again

MVP Arena not selected to host March Madness again

NCAA selected 240 host sites for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

The NCAA has announced new host site selections for March Madness. Albany did not make the cut for postseason rounds in 2027 and 2028.

MVP Arena had two packed March Madness seasons and hoped for a repeat. Bob Belber, the arena’s general manager, said it’s disappointing not to get a recommendation.

Many major markets submitted bids and only so few championships were to be awarded to cities nationwide.

The closest venue to Albany for 2027 and 2028 is down in New York City at Madison Square Garden.

Basketball fans in the Capital Region are bummed!

“It’s really too bad,” Cassidy Reid said. “I think we’re going to miss out on the energy of having the tournament here. It’s going to be bad not seeing the influx of people coming to town.”

MVP Arena held the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 back in March. Star player, Caitlin Clark brought in tons of Iowa fans.

In 2023, the men’s first and second rounds came to Albany.

The games brought big crowds; thousands of people flocked to downtown Albany, and it boosted the local economy. Huge sporting events like March Madness is a win all around.

The fans enjoy it the most.

“I wish they’d come back. I wanted to go but I just couldn’t swing it. A lot of people I know went. Enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a great thing for the community. Great economic boost for everyone here. Especially with Caitlin Clark. That was a ton of fun having her come here,” Sam Smith said.

“Albany needs that spotlight. Everybody needs to come here,” Ukai Smith said. “It just brings more joy and happiness to the town.”

Belber said the NCAA did for MVP Arena to put in a bid for the next round in 2029-2030.

The 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s ice hockey is already contracted to come back to Albany.
