4 phone calls threaten violence to the Bethlehem Central School District
BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (WNYT) – The Bethlehem Central School District said that four phone calls have threatened gun violence across the district this past week.
The latest one coming in this past Thursday at 11:40 p.m. and threatening gun violence to an unspecified football game at the high school on Friday.
All four of the threats this week were called into the Bethlehem Police Department.
NewsChannel 13 spoke with one grandparent, Jeff Mazzone, whose grandson stayed home from school this past week.
“Our daughter called us and told us that there had been threats, and she wasn’t going to let him go to school. And then it turned out the coaches didn’t let their own kids go to practice or go to school,” Mazzone said.
This now marks a total of ten threats that have been called into threatening violence across the district since September 10th. The Bethlehem Police Department along with the FBI called all of these threats a “swatting” hoax and not credible.
Parent Gina Norfleet said that she is thankful for how law enforcement and the district have handled the recent threats.
“I feel that the best police department and school district has done the due diligence to, say that they are a swatting, and I trust the process. And I truly feel in my heart that my child is safe at school,” Norfleet said.
After-school activities and sports games continued as scheduled Friday night with an added police presence at Bethlehem High School as a safety precaution.
The district said that police believe the suspect is not from the area.
