Police arrest man after hourslong standoff in Schenectady
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WNYT) – A man has been arrested after a long standoff at a home on Congress Street at the intersection of 8th Avenue in Schenectady.
The man has been identified as 39-year-old Earl Moore. Moore is being charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief.
Schenectady Police told NewsChannel 13 that the first 911 call came in at 3:54 a.m. for a report of a man with a weapon on 7th Avenue and Congress Street.
Police said that man, Earl Moore, then shot his weapon and then ran inside of a house near 8th Avenue.
The standoff went on for hours and closed down Congress Street between 8th and 9th Avenue. It also forced residents such as Brandi Guicciardini near the crime scene to be locked inside their homes.
“We were stuck in the house all day. We weren’t allowed to go outside. Nothing,” Guicciardini said.
Neighbors said police also forced everyone to evacuate the three-story apartment home where the man was hiding.
“We’ve been outside for like, two and a half, three hours now. And then you just told us that somebody is in there and they have to get them out. So, we just have to wait,” said one resident of the three-story apartment home.
Police attempted to get Moore out of the home, but he did not comply.
Schenectady Police brought out their SWAT team along with K–9s to the home. Upon arrival officers broke windows and used a chemical irritant called Oleoresin Capsicum, commonly known as pepper spray, in an attempt to get the Moore to leave the house.
Police were able to arrest Moore just before 5 p.m. Saturday as they found him hiding in the basement of the home.
