Saratoga BLM, protesters vow to create new de-escalation team

Saratoga BLM wants action taken on police reform plan

Saratoga BLM says city leaders are not taking necessary actions to adopt and enforce its police reform plan and the 50 recommendations to create change.

Saratoga Black Lives Matter stood on the steps on Saratoga Springs city hall demanding the entire police reform plan be adopted.

The city adopted this plan after high tensions between police and BLM protestots.

The plan included 50 recommendations, like a civilian review board, de-escalation training, and responding to calls with social workers instead of police.

“It does not take three years for you to implement a plan that was created in 6 months,” Chandler Hickenbottom said, with Saratoga BLM.

28 of 50 points have been adopted.

Despite claims from the city that most of the goals have been met, members of Saratoga Black Lives Matter are tired of waiting, they said.

“Rather than listening to the community, specifically who spend those months researching, kneading and painstakingly compiling the recommendations in the 50-point plan, the city has continued to undermine the work to activists,” Lexis Figuereo said, with Saratoga BLM.

The organization said they are working to create their own emergency response team to response to non-police emergencies with trained professionals. Those professionals will include social workers trained in de-escalation.
