Two people hurt in Troy apartment fire
Troy, N.Y. (WNYT) – Apartment resident Jack McKeown says he didn’t hear the fire alarm. The woman across the hall from him banged on his door and woke him up.
“And she said, ‘There was a fire in my apartment. My oxygen tank blew up.’ I said, ‘Oh, my God! We gotta get out of here,'” said McKeown.
The three-story apartment complex is tucked away on West Sunnyside Way, off of Ingalls Avenue and Ninth Street in Troy.
“Well, I was just sitting there having my coffee and I heard the alarm go off,” said resident Michael Signer. “They’re doing building inspections this week so I kind of brushed it off. Then I see the fire truck coming down the driveway so I changed my mind. I came outside and there they were, up on the ladders. That’s when I saw the smoke.”
“There was just a little bit of smoke coming out of the vents for the air conditioning,” he said. “But then once they took the window out and they got air in there, then a lot of yellow smoke started coming out.”
Troy fire chief Richard Cellucci says the sprinkler system did its job, and the fire was contained to the apartment.
“So I said we’ve got to get out of here,” said Jack McKeown. “So the maintenance man came down the hallway and he was kicking in doors and banging on them in case there were any residents in there, to get them out of there. And he probably got out about five or six people. He saved their lives.”
He says the maintenance worker was also feeling the doors to locate the fire.
“And then when he got down to where the door was of the apartment, he kicked the door in and– I was standing right there– and the smoke just came billowing out. It was very scary,” he said.
“There was one maintenance worker from the facility went in the apartment,” said Chief Cellucci. “He was transported with smoke inhalation to a local hospital. I think he’ll be okay, but he did take in some smoke.”
The chief says the female resident suffered burns to her legs and was airlifted to a burn unit for treatment.
