State Police offers Halloween safety tips
State Police are offering tips to keep everyone safe on Halloween.
Police are having extra patrols to target unsafe and impaired drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Halloween is a particularly dangerous night because of the number of impaired drivers and large increase in pedestrians.
Tips for pedestrians include walking on sidewalks if they are available and using crosswalks. People should walk facing traffic if on the road. They should look left, right and left when crossing the road. Create a “buddy system” and don’t walk alone. Walking in groups is preferable. Travel in well-lit areas.
Also, children should be fully visible and wear reflective clothing, carry a flashlight or glow stick. Make sure costumes fit correctly because they can create a tripping hazard. Also, hats and masks should not block vision.
Tips for drivers include giving themselves extra time to get their destination and stay alert for pedestrians, especially before turning at a green light and making a right turn on right.
Also, contact police if you see a drunk driver.
