Large Warrensburg brush fire caused by campfire, said police

Large Warrensburg brush fire under investigation

The dry and breezy weather was a challenge for firefighters battling a multi-acre brush fire in Warren County on Friday.

An update following the large brush fire in Warrensburg last week.

Law enforcement tells us that the brush fire was due to origins of a campfire that was lit near the Sinai Retreat.

Firefighters in Warren County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation say dry conditions and the wind made it difficult to put out the flames.

The fire burned five to six acres of land.

It happened near the Sinai Retreat, on State Route 418 in Warrensburg. It is a wellness retreat for Jewish men and women.

“The wind was blowing a good 15, 20 miles an hour and once the wind started kicking in, it just went. There was no stopping it until the wind started to die down,” Assistant Fire Chief Troy Miller said. “We had leaf blowers and water and finally knocked it down.” With the dry conditions, people are being encouraged not to burn outdoors until further notice. That includes all bonfires, ceremonial fires, camping fires, and barrel fires.
