Friends, co-workers of injured tow truck driver encourage people to slow down
Friends and co-workers of Brett Lussier, a tow truck operator injured in a crash on Saturday, are speaking about his ongoing recovery.
A state trooper was also injured in the crash and continues to recover.
Tow operators said drivers need to hear the message, slow down, move over.
While they know they put themselves in danger out on the roads, it was a shock to hear about the crash.
The trooper, Nicholas Abbondola, was conducting a traffic stop Saturday on the Northway in Colonie.
A vehicle was being loaded onto a tow truck on the side of the highway when the tow operator, Brett Dempsey, 29, and the trooper were hit by a pickup truck.
The driver of the pickup truck, Jason Guerin, 40, of Malta, is facing charges, including aggravated vehicular assault, assault and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
Dempsey has been in the tow industry for about 10 years.
A father of four, he has been released from the hospital, while Abbondola continues to recover there.
