New York voters have approved adding the Equal Rights Amendment to the state constitution.

The Associated Press is reporting that the measure, also known as Proposition 1, has passed. With 30% of the precincts reporting, 72% of people voted in favor.

The wording of the questions said that it would protect against unequal treatment of citizens “based on ethnicity, national origin, age disability and sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy.” It also protects “against unequal treatment based on reproductive healthcare and autonomy.”

Supporters said the proposition is needed to enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution. Opponents have raised concerns that the language is too vague and would leave it open to interpretation.  They worry that it would erode parental rights. Also, opponents expressed concern it would make it harder to prohibit transgender girls from playing girls sports in New York.
