Trump campaign promises have Capital Region migrants anxious
Stress levels in the area migrant community are rising. That heightening anxiety is caused by the results of last week’s election, plus the uncertainty of what will come next.
One of President-elect Donald Trump’s most popular campaign promises was to carry out the largest migrant deportation in American history. Now folks in that community are taking the president-elect at his word.
At the Refugee and Immigrant Support Service Headquarters in Albany, asylum seekers from 90 different countries assimilate to American life.
Rhetoric has become reality. When Trump won the election last week, fear quickly spread through their community.
RISSE Executive Director Daniel Butterworth said he’s been hearing stories about possible workplace raids, and he is having trouble envisioning what that might look like.
According to Butterworth, political instability is not a new phenomenon for migrants. It happens to be the reason they came here in the first place. Newcomers provide a tremendous economic benefit to the community beyond that, he said, supporting small business and many times creating their own.
Hear what he says are some of the biggest concerns right now in the migrant community and how RISSE is hoping to help the people who are concerned, by watching the video of Dan Levy’s story.
