Ravena firefighters heads downstate to help fight wildfires
As the wildfires continue downstate, more than 40 fire departments have been helping to control the blazes. Now, the village of Ravena Fire Department in Albany County is answering the call for help. The Ravena Fire Department volunteers left Wednesday morning to help fight the wildfires downstate.
The department said its firefighters are preparing to deploy for up to 72 hours.
The deployment is in response to a request for help made through the New York State Fire Mobilization and Mutual Aid plan.
As soon as the request was made, the department said several firefighters immediately volunteered to help.
Officials say the fire has burned over 5,000 acres, and the New York State Fire Mobilization and Mutual Plan has been activated.
As a result, Gov. Kathy Hochul has issued a statewide burn ban. This means New Yorkers can not light outdoor fires, must use extreme caution while grilling, and must report any fires immediately.
Due to increased fire risk, the statewide burn ban will be in effect until November 30.
