Former Rensselaer County Elections Commissioner Jason Schofield has avoided jail time in his ballot fraud case.

Schofield was sentenced Monday to one year of probation and fines up to $3,200.

Back in 2021, he used the names and birthdates of voters to fraudulently apply for fake absentee ballots.

He also admitted he took nine of the ballots, while knowing the official Rensselaer County Board of Elections records would falsely show the ballots were mailed to the voters.

Schofield resigned from office in December 2022.

Three defendants in the ballot fraud trial – Rich Crist, Jim Gordon, and Leslie Wallace – were all found not guilty back in September. All are all high-ranking members of Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin’s administration. McLaughlin was not charged in the case.
