Woman who died in Sandgate fire loved horses

The woman who died with her 12-day-old son in a fire in Bennington County had a passion for animals, especially horses. That’s according to her obituary.

Nicole Grogan, 22, died in the fire on the morning of New Year’s Day at 1337 Chunks Brook Road in the town of Sandgate. Her infant son Oliver also died. Two other people were injured in the fire and are in burn units in New York hospitals.

Grogan’s obituary said she attended Hoosick Falls Central School, Arlington Memorial and Burr and Burton Academy.

“Nicole was a very empathetic person and she could light up any room with her smile,” the obituary read. “Nicole’s pride and joy in life was being a mother.”

Grogan leaves behind her young daughter, five siblings and father.

There will be no services at this time, but her obituary asked for donations to be made to the Dorset Equine Rescue c/o Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home P.O. Box 957 Bennington, VT 05201.

A GoFundMe to pay for family expenses has raised over $5,300.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
