Four additional officers suspended in inmate’s death

Four additional officers have been suspended in connection to the investigation of Robert Brooks‘ death.

Brooks was beaten inside Marcy Correctional Facility on December 9. He died the next day at a hospital.

The four officers suspended without pay are:

• Sgt. Christine Ploss
• CO Jared Popiel
• Sgt. Evan Thisse
• RN 1 Patricia Matos

This brings the total of those suspended to 17.

One corrections officer has already resigned. While the cause of death is still pending, the preliminary autopsy results from the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office state that the cause of death is asphyxia due to compression of the neck.
