One man dies after falling through ice on the Great Sacandaga Lake

New York State Police responded to Chupka Road at about 8:16 Sunday morning.

Two people fell through the ice of the Great Sacandaga Lake Sunday morning leaving one man dead.

New York State Police responded to the area of Chupka Road in Mayfield, N.Y. for a report of utility task vehicle that went through the ice of the Great Sacandaga Lake.

Authorities said it was a side-by-side accident and occurred on the lake between Sunset Bay and Cranberry Creek.

State Police learned through their investigation that two people were inside the vehicle when it fell through the ice.

Investigators said two fishermen pulled the two people out of the freezing cold water.

One individual was unresponsive and then crews began CPR on him at the scene. That individual was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital where they later died.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said that the individual was a man from Mayfield.

The other individual was uninjured.

Sheriff Richard Giardino of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to stay off of the ice due to the unpredictability of it. His office said, “Until the ice thickens, we recommend you stay off the ice.”

State Police tell NewsChannel 13 the incident is under investigation and the identity of the person that died will not be released at this time.
