An Albany County town can once again conduct town business after several months of problems there.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has appointed a member to the Berne Town Board, according to her office.
As NewsChannel 13 reported earlier this week, the town board filed a lawsuit against Hochul over long-term vacancies on the board.
Three town board members suddenly resigned in August.
This left the board without a quorum, which is the minimum number of members it needs to make decisions.
In that lawsuit, the town argued Hochul has the authority to appoint someone until a special election could be held.
Hochul’s office said she appointed Berne resident Melanie Lacour to the board.
“Melanie’s professional background and commitment to the local community make her well suited to take on this appointment and help move Berne forward,” said Gov. Hochul, in a statement. “My team has worked closely with the local community to appoint someone who will create a positive work environment and regain the public’s trust, and I am confident in Melanie’s ability to do just that.”
This means the board can now resume official business, which includes passing the 2025 budget.
